William Robert Emms 1833
« on: Sunday 29 May 05 16:27 BST (UK) »
I am looking for more information on William Robert/or Harding EMMS, born aparently in 1833. (From Cemetary Records) He moved to Nelson, New Zealand and was from Wells-next-the-sea. (though I guess he might not of been born there)

He was married in NZ in 1866

His occupation is listed as Mariner on his son's NZ Marriage Records.

I have some access to census records and have found a William Emms that is born in 1836.

Could this my William EMMS? I wonder if he *lied* about his age for some reason in later years.

Any conjecture or thoughts welcome. I hope Norfolk is the right forum for Wells-next-the-sea.
Thanks :)

Looks like it could be him.

...and they are also there in 1841:

HO1017/772/16/fol7 p5 Church St Wells
William Emes 35 Pipemaker J(ourneyman)
Sarah Do 30
William Do 5
Charlotte Do 9 months

Don't forget to take into account the lack of standardised spelling and the rounding up of ages in the 1841 Census.

Brian :)

Thank you so much. I think I might go with this William Emms. He is the closest match I have and since I can't find any other ones in Wells-next-the-sea at that time, I think it is likely him.

The disorder with his birth date, could quite likely be an accident/ignorance at the time of his death (since that was in N.Zealand and confirming birth dates etc.. across such a distance at that time was likely difficult in 1901.)

Thanks again, and best of luck with your own research endeavours.

Tanith

Hi Tanith
I have information about William Robert Emms who was born in 1833 Wells-next-the-Sea.  He came to Nelson New Zealand in approx 1863 and married Amelia Emma Jones on 31st March 1865.  They had 9 children. I am a descendant of their eldest Arthur Oswald Emms.  I can help you with information about this family and the other 8 children.  Can you help me with who William's parents were?
Looking forward to hearing from you soon

Hello Susie

How sure are you about the date and place of birth of your William Emms, I am interested in this line as I have traced my Emms line back to Wells around this time period but I have not been able to find your William on any records I have looked at so far, I can give you the information I have on my other Emms family members in the wells area, the only William I have found is the William mentioned b1836. I know the records can be confusing but it would be nice to share any info that could help us both in our research.

Hi John

Sorry for taking so long in answering your email.
The information I have about William Robert Emms comes from his Death certificate which states as follows:

William Robert Emms was born in Wells, Norfolk, England and was 67 years old when he died on 16th May 1901 in Nelson. New Zealand.  He had spent 38 years in New Zealand.
I also have copies of birth records of some of his 8 children which also states Wells, Norfolk.

I also have some information about Frank Bond Emms from Birmingham & Sarah Lucy Towler from Eastham.

I hope this helps.

Suzie

Hi Suzie

I would love to say that this William is the Grandson of my GGG Granddads brother, if that makes sense, but the fact is I just dont know. As with previous emails in this thread, I am drawnto the William who seems to have been born c1836 in Wells, who I believe to be the son of William Emms & Sarah Youngs who were married in Wells in 1835, but this does not quite tally with the information you have. I am always a bit wary now of just relying on census returns but as with the previous emails it is the only William I have been able to find at that time and in the right place ???

What is your opinion on this William?

Best Wishes

John
