Ellis Sottleston (Sottenstall) was my GG Grandfather....His wife Ann Park Sottleston, and two daugthers, Sarah and Eliza (my G Grandmother) were converted to the Mormon church, and emigrated to Idaho in the States.

Ellis was born Ellis Sottenstall (which is a derivation of Saltonstall).  However, if you look at the gravestone of his wife, it is written as Sottleston (http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Sottleston&GSfn=Ann&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=59225060&df=all&), AND the missionary that converted them to Mormonism (Thomas Gledhill), recorded in his journal that their name was Sottleston...his family transcribed his journal (dated 1892...see http://gledhillancestors.org/documents/TGJournalTranscribed.pdf).

Anyway, not sure if this creates more questions than answers, but for some reason, their last name was changed to Sottleston....but Ellis was born a Sottenstall....it isn't a modern mistranscription, but the family themselves actually used this last name.
