St Lewis Suburbs, Quebec
« on: Tuesday 30 October 12 22:08 GMT (UK) »
I have two letters written by ancestors from St Lewis Suburbs, Quebec and wonder if anyone can tell me exactly where this is.
The first letter is from Mrs Mary Martin nee MacDonald and is dated 5th March 1860 and the address is Blakelock Street, St Lewis Suburbs.
The second letter is from Mary's grand daughter Marion Ferguson and is dated 25th November 1889 and the address is 26 St Michael Street.
Mary Martin was born in either Ardgour or Fort William, Scotland in 1821 and was the daughter of Charles MacDonald and his wife Ann Boyd. She was married to a soldier named John Martin, and had at least three daughters, Charlotte, Lizzie and Ann.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Saint-Louis is just outside of the downtown Quebec City area, but I fear Blakelock has long ago been changed to something as French as possible.

In the 1850's, in the northwest part of Montreal, there were St. Lewis, St. Peter and St. Lawrence Suburbs. St Lawrence Suburb was settled in great part by Scottish ancestry.

You need to try to place the family members in census info.

some sites to search for census are

https://familysearch.org
http://automatedgenealogy.com
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/index-e.html

Where did you find this, Valerie? The only mention I can find of Saint Lewis Suburbs is in Quebec City :P Can't find St Peter either......

Abrach, would it be possible to scan and post the handwriting of the place name in the letters? Doesn't have to be a very big file.

Cheers,

Dang...I'm not finding any of them, anywhere, anytime. My brain feels like mashed potatoes :P

Abrach, are you sure you're not making all of this up?? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

If you can't find them in the censuses, give us more information such as birth dates & places, and we'll try to help.

Hello chinakay and valeriec

The letters I have are photocopies and are quite dark so I don't know how well they would scan. However, the handwriting is very clear, and there is no mistaking the addresses that have been written. I will look at the websites you have suggested and have another read of the two letters to see if there are any other clues.
Thanks for your help
Best wishes from Scotland

I found the 3 suburbs in an online book about maps and street names for Montreal in the 1850's. Of course, stupid me didn't write down the name of the book and now I can't find it again.

I have been running into the same problem as China. Can't find a Mary and John together in any census. Now that we know the birth date for Charlotte that may help place them.
