Dating two old "portrait plates"....
« on: Thursday 01 November 12 10:08 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

I hope it is OK for me to put these two pictures here.... they are not old photos, but two old "portrait plates".

My mother always told me that they belonged to her grandfather, so we are going back to the mid/late 1800s / early 1900s, but I wonder whether they might not be earlier...

There are no markings on the back, but would it be possible to date them from the portraits?  Also, would the two ladies have been anyone in particular - such as a family member, or just an "imaginary" lady?!!

Many thanks for any help

Hello Tilly
The first thing you notice on these is the rim decoration has disappeared on plate one,
meaning it was added after the firing & probably added after they were bought.
They don't look English, possibly German. They may be images of the Royal Household.
The hairstyle in plate two is early 1800's but with the Victorian predilection for this type
of artwork it could be late 1800's.As it's unmarked gives the impression they were mass produced.
Henry Sandon where are you?

Hello Jim

Thank you very much for your reply -  very interesting.

Quite intriguing to see that the rim decoration was probably added after they were bought.... the side of the family which owned the plate (my Cliffords, I think) were quite artistic, so maybe one of them did it!  If they are late 1800s, then that confirms they could have belonged to my Gt Grandfather (whose brother was an artist.....)

I will have a google and see if I can find any portraits of the German royal household at about that time...

thank you again

Tilly

Could the first plate be a painting of Empress Augusta of Germany, wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II (he started WWI), they came to the throne in 1888? could it be a plate in honour of the occasion but maybe a couple years after theycame to the throne?

The bottom one reminds me of Queen Adelaide of Britain or even Victoria, the Duchess of Kent, Queen Victoria's mother. they were ones for having hair like that, especially Adelaide, in ever portrait I've seen of her she has her hair like that, both the Queen and the Duchess were Germans.

Just a thought

By golly, look at this. Gary could be right about Adelaide...especially in the second portrait, the black & white sketch.

Hi Gary and China

Thank you very much for your replies.

I have been looking at various portraits of Adelaide, Victoria and Augusta.... definite likeness there!!  The second one does look like Victoria to me, something about the way she is smiling.... but then she looks like Adelaide, too!!

Interesting!!

Oddly enough, I thought that the first one bore a resemblance to Queen Mary (the one with the dollshuse)
