McQueen in Scotland & Somerset
« on: Saturday 03 November 12 00:29 GMT (UK) »
All,
I am doing some research for a loved mother in law (I bet that not may people can say that!). She is nearing 80, and I am putting some resources together for a birthday present. She has been collecting family history for most of her life, and has done an amazing job without the internet; I can usually do it quicker with this resource.
We have the Pool family, largely in Annan, Dumfries, who marry into the McQueen family. The McQueens ran fisheries in Abercorn and Dornock. This is actually the easy part, and I can find records from 1841 onwards quite easily. I have also found the relevant marriages and some borths through the Scotland site. It is a bit expensive to search, but Ancestry also have transcriptions to help in the initial search.

I also have a suggestion that the McQueen family who spend most of their lives in the East of London (Poplar & the likes) who end up in Somerset are possibly linked to this Scottish lineage. I doubt it very much unless we go back hundreds of years.

Can anyone suggest any ideas on this?

Thanks
Kevan

Hi Kevan,
I may be able to help a little with parts of your research.  My second cousin 4x removed, Elizabeth Lorraine (1799-1872) married Thomas McQueen (1794-1882) at Graitney (ie Gretna) in 1823.  A photo of Elizabeth and some of her children is in my Ancestry tree (Martin family tree (2) - [http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/38830317/recent?pg=42].  They had twelve children - seven daughters and five sons.  Their fifth daughter, Grace (c1832- ?) married George Pool at Dornock in 1867.  As you say, the McQueens ran salmon fisheries at Abercorn and Dornock.  I've checked and all of the boys remained in the salmon fishing business around Dornock (except Thomas, who became a fishmonger in Falkirk), so it looks like the London branch moved there sometime earlier or later.  It was a big family! Hope this helps a bit, though I guess you have some of it already  :)

This looks excellent. I think this is George Pool at Swordwell? Their son Thomas McQueen Pool marries a Barbara Irving; and they have a daughter Sheilagh Barbara Eileen Pool in 1905 at Saltcoat. She marries in 1931 to Leonard Hollyman.
Grace (nee McQueen) Pool is a widow running an hotel in Cumberland in 1891; and back in Abercorn by 1901.
The link to the McQueens of London was a red herring, although I did research them.
I will post a little more later after looking at your tree on Ancestry.
Many thanks for this detail.

Best

Yes, that's right, Kevan.  Sheilagh has a sister, Ethel, and two brothers, George and Archibald.

Let me know if you need any further help.

Regards

Ian

Hi Kevan,
I visited the Dornock Salmon Fisheries Cottage yesterday Mon 24th August 20.
Thomas McQueen indeed managed the Dornock fisheries, following this his son Robert? took over the management while he went on to manage the Salmon Fisheries at Abercorn on the River Forth for the Hppetoun Estate in the role of Tacksman.
He returned to Dornock, where he died and is probably buried in the Dornock Churchyard.
Thomas McQueen and Elizabeth Lorrain had many children their youngest was Patrick John Shaw Stewart McQueen, I am his direct descendant.
His son William Lorraine McQueen 1867 - 1905 lived  and died in Dunragit
His son Patrick John McQueen 1897 - 1957 born Dunragit died Dumbarton
His son William Lorraine McQueen 1929 - 2019 Born Kirkmaiden died Dumbarton
Me, David McQueen
If you want to get in touch for further information please do
I would like to know what McQueen family information you have.

Kind regards
David

My grandmother was Sheilagh Barbara Eileen Pool Hollyman. She named my mother Loraine McQueen. She has a single 'r' in Hollyman as my grandfather missed the second 'r' when he registered her birth. I named my daughter Isabella Murray McQueen.
