1881 England Census Emily is living with her mother, Mary Ann and her brother William J Matthews with their Grandfather at Sandwich.

Sandwich, Kent.

Jacob G Matthews, 69, head.
Caroline Matthews, 68, wife.
MARY ANN MATTHEWS, 26, married, salt renderer's wife.
William J Matthews, 3, Grandson, born, Sandwich.
EMILY E MATTHEWS, 9mo, Granddaughter, born, Dover.

Looks like Mary Ann's husband John Matthews a salt renderer was away on Census night.

Emily Matthews, 20, born, Dover, Kent, was a domestic servant working for retired builder Mr James Harris, 75 and his wife Mary Harris 73.


1911 England Census.

Emily Matthews, 29, born Dover Kent, was single and working as a cook for , is working for Wilfred Johnstone 39, an East India Merchant and his wife Adelaide May Johnstone also 39 at Littleworth Cottage, Esher, Surrey.

The shipping record that Ros found had Emily as a cook as well.

Caroline Hammond Matthews, 57, married, Warder's wife, born, Sandwich.
John Matthews, 19, single, son, occupation ?? born, Sandswich.

Caroline's husband & John's father was a Warder at the Sandwich Gaol.

Sandwich Gaol, 186 Deal Rd, Sandwich.
Jacob George Matthews, boarder, 58, married, Warder of the Gaol, born, Sandwich.

 This puts John Matthews's birth around 1852 in Sandwich.

Jacob George Mathews was born 7 Jan 1813 & died 15 Feb 1885 in Sandwich Kent.
His son John Mathews was baptised 29 Feb 1852 in Sandwich Kent.
 
I believe that he died 20 Sep 1936 in Brisbane.  - Can you confirm?
