Fred Haslam REME
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 22:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi to all

I am doing my family tree and im trying to trace Fred Haslam Born 1909 in Codnor. he is know to have joined the army REME. it is thought that he served in Kenya between 1952 - 1960 in the Maumau uprising.

I know alot of my family come from the Codnor area. I have found on this site a reference to Kate Buntin who had a fish and chip shop. In my family I have a Joseph Haslam (born 1887) who married an Elizabeth Mabel Ratcliffe in 1908. Elizabeth Mabel Ratcliffle (born 1891) she had a brother  Ernest William Ratcliffe who was killed at sea on HMS Lovain in 1918. Elizabeth Mabel Ratcliffes mother was Hannah Ratcliffe. Hannah I believe was married to someone called Ratcliffle (I dont know his first name or when they where married). Hannah then married a Thomas Palryeman and lived in Codnor gate in 1901.

I have been talking with my Aunt and she can remember that her Uncle ( Fred Haslam born 1909) use to peel chips and pull a cart with a steel drum full of oil  into the market place every Saturday. She can also remember them helping out the miners during the 1926 strike feeding them in the market. She believes that Elizabeth Mabel Ratcliffe may have lived, worked or was adopted by someone called Buntin who had something to do with chips. I know Elizabeth Mabel Haslam was living in Parkins Yard in 1918. All my family know hers as Mabel and she did not use her first name. Has anyone got any info that may help me fill in any parts.

Many thanks for reading this

Steve.

Per freebmd

Marriages December qtr 1891

Thomas Palfrey   Belper  7b 1155
Hannah Ratcliffe

Births March qtr 1890
Ernest William Ratcliffe   Basford  7b 137

Births June qtr 1891
Elizabeth Mabel Ratcliffe    Basford  7b 126

I strongly suspect both Ratcliffe children were illegitimate as the 1871 shows Hannah Ratcliffe aged 5 b Codnor

Hi

yes Fred is the son of Joseph and Elizabeth.

Fred is my grandads brother. We think he married someone called Nellie ???? he had 2 sons and 1 daughter. He left the army and lived in yorkshire between 1960 to 2000. no idea of his date of death or place. his kids are Adrian, Ian and Margaret. One of them was a doctor we think in Leeds.

I know Ernest was killed on HMS Louvain in WW1. have loads of info on him. Think you are right about the father of Ernest and Elizabeth Mabel.

Only person in my grandads brothers and sister with bits missing is Fred.

Hi

Quote

If Fred lived in Yorks until around 2000, he would have been over 90 when he died but there is no death in Yorks that fits his birth reg in June qtr 1909

The nearest is a Fred Haslam who died in Farnworth Lancs 1962 aged 53

Hi

I see his surname is mis-transcribed as Haslan.  I have reported the error

It may be an idea to buy a copy of that death cert to see who reported the death etc as there are several Fred Haslam marriages

1930 to Mabel Heaton in Chesterfield

1935 to ?? Hinman in Sheffield

1946 to Margaret Hesketh in Hemsworth

You could try searching for his childrens births using each of the spouse surnames above
