William Barnes
« on: Monday 12 November 12 15:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone help me with my research into my maternal great great great grandfather William Barnes, born 29 May 1814 in Massingham, Norfolk? I have his marriage to Ann Codling on 20th Nov 1841, the witnesses were George Codling and Elizabeth Barnes.

I have been unable to find William's parents. Do I need to search local record offices to get the information? If so can someone post the links.

Also does anyone know the historical reason why members of a family of farm labourers would migrate to Sunderland to work in heavy industry between 1871 and 1881? Did something happen to reduce the amount of farm work, possibly the introduction of machinery?

Thanks for your help.

Barny

Hi,

More often than not the reason Ag Labourers went north for work was that the pay was better, in those days Ag Labourers worked long hours for poor pay.  Somewhere on RootsChat there is a topic on the subject, I believe on the Essex board, other factors were mentioned such as the practice of farmers putting their labourers on reduced pay during the winter months.

Re migration from Norfolk to the North East for work. I have a number of ancestors who moved up to Northumberland, principally William Osborne, his wife Harriet and several members of his family. William was in Ketteringham in 1851 but by 1861, aged 65 he was living in Earsdon  Northumberland. He continued working as an agricultural worker, but his sons, sons-in-law and grandson -all of whom moved around the same time- worked in the mines. Most remained in Northumberland, one even made enough money to cease mining and buy a small farm!

I imagine the reason for moving was to improve work opportunities, presumably increasing mechanisation meant less farm work and/or lower wages.

In terms of practicalities I would think they travelled by sea -in returning coal boats perhaps?

I read a post about a similar subject concerning Suffolk farm workers moving North and I tried to find it so I could send you the link but no luck, I'm afraid.
