Yes I have the parish register of baptism of John to William and Isabel. He was born 22nd, baptised 31st December 1732.

Hi Shirley,

I think you have not noticed that William and Isobel had 2 sons called John who died in their infancy, see link of the one you quote. He died in March 1733.

So unless you have another record of a son called John to William and Isobel, I think that you have to start again.

As you said earlier, may have to prove John and Helen first, It is better to prove them as you go. If not you end up on a wild goose chase, and I have also been there before.

Hi Shirley
looking on Ancestry there are family tree's with John Manners who married Agnes Montgomery
they have John's Parents as Joseph Manners and Ann Hervie,
just thought I would post incase it helps,
also on family search there is the following
John Manners birthdate 11/5/1775 old Kilpatrick Dunbarton
Parents
Joseph Manners born 1734 and Ann Hervie

Hi Elaine
Thanks

I've noticed this as well and  I think somewhere back in time I checked the family but they did not seem right - but I will check it out again - now that I have more information on hand.

Hi Shirley

Regarding deaths for John and Agnes, you are very fortunate to have found MIs for them in Dumbarton  :)

If you are trying to confirm any details of John's parents, an OPR entry for a death or burial will not give you this. This kind of information was only recorded post the start of official registration in 1855. Some notes as background from SP:

Hello Monica.

An interesting side bar to your comment. In the case of the ROW [Rhu] DUMBARTON OPR our research was greatly assisted when we discovered that as early as 1844 the birth records there were recording the Grand Parents, pre dating the civil requirements by 10 years.

Hi Alan  :)

Well, that is good news! You very occassionally find that inspired clerk who went that bit extra on the gathering of info which is always a lucky strike with the OPRs.

Hi,

Have you tried contacting West Dunbartonshire Council's Local Studies department:
http://www.west-dunbarton.gov.uk/tourism-and-visitor-attractions/local-history-and-heritage/contact-a-local-history-librarian/
They might be able to help you they hold MI's, OPR's and some local church records.
