All I could find, nothing related to the Carus Family but a much earlier spelling of the place name ?

Westmorland; and of an acre of land, £4 12d. of rent, and a moiety of a knight's ... Uluethewayt [Ulfthwaite], AST THEWAYT [Asthwaite], and Stirkeland Randolph, co.

There is also an "Esthwaite" Green near Kendal (Westmorland) and another in Washington, County Durham.
Stay in the  Moment

Grainger - Wigton and Newcastle Area
Gibson - Newcastle/Scotland (Roxburgh) Areas
Crisell/Crissell/Chrysel/etc. - Suffolk Area
Schoch - Germany (Öhringen Area)

Never heard of Asthwaite & I lived in Kendal for over 20 years.
however in Kendal there´s a place called Carus Green.
Might be worth investigating why it is called that

My best guess would be Esthwaite, not much more than a hefty stones-throw from where I'm sitting right now.

Thanks for the responses.  I posted this question on the Cumbria History Site, and had this response:

Asthwaite was short for the name of a building, Asthwaite Hall. Thomas Carus occupied "a capital messuage called Asthwaite Hall in Nether Staveley" (between Kendal and Windermere).

Excellent. I've just gone over the 1:10,000 map for the Stavely area and can't see any placenames that seem to be derived from Asthwaite. Did the Cumbria History site give any clues as to whereabouts the hall was?

I'd go with Esthwaite too. Mike, you are plainly not much more than a stone's throw from me as well then! ;D
