I had a HP laptop and exactly the same thing happened. Unfortunately about 6 weeks ago it died completely, so I've given it up as a bad job and bought a new laptop.

The point I was trying to make is that the laptop in question is allegedly still under warranty.

having looked back, Nick, I see what you mean, it is the obvious place to go.

Since the only bits of this program I might need are covered by by norton gold I see no use for hpsupport assistant, the odd time i looked at it it was more confusing than using the windows facilities direct.

mine would never update, most likely because it was in coflict with norton, so I ignore the messages, seemingly without a problem.

these are hp support updates only, not windows updates, which still take place automatically, which I think is Barbara's worry

Could these HP updates be similar to my Toshiba updates, 'drivers are being updated and downloaded direct to your computer'?

Its possible brian, but i found the hp program an absolute pain, it wouldn't go away at times, had to resort to task manger to close it sometimes.

my previous computer was also an HP, I ignored it on that as well.

I've just brouht it up
hp supportassistant allows me to.
maintain my computer with updates, alerts, tips and automated tuneups
 troubleshoot my computer
 learn about my computer
 get help

I have updates set to automatic.

It is very keen to get me to share information about computer usage with HP automatically, this will enhance my experience, seemingly.

I don't share my personal info with anybody :D
That's why I don't have any credit/store cards.
