Hello Malcolm, and welcome to RootsChat.

My interest is in the descendants of Henry Hoare and Margaret Ann Keith. She was my first cousin three times removed.

There were five children, and I have found what I think are death references of four of them
- Margaret Quartermaine Hoare, born 11 April 1867, died 31 July 1955
- Mary Wyllie Hoare, born 5 December 1868, married John Henry Caudell in 1895, died 21 October 1934
- Harry Hoare, born 9 September 1870, died 1897
- Louisa Hoare, born 4 June 1872, died 13 July 1872

The fifth one was Alfred Hoare, born 28 June 1873. Could he be the one who died aged 18 in Devon in 1891?

I think that he could be, but at the time the family were in Buckinghamshire, so not sure why he would have been brought from Exeter to Brompton cemetery in London, unless more members of the family were buried there.

Yes, that's really why I haven't put him down definitely as 'mine'.

I found the Brompton Cemetery burials, and note that he was the second burial in the grave. There doesn't seem to be any easy way of finding out who was the first. His mother and one sister died in Edinburgh, and his father, brothers and the other sister outlived him, and there are two other Alfred Hoares of the right age in the London area in the 1881 census.  So he is probably not the right one.

Hi there
I have found more information on Alfred Hoare, so far we have Alfred born 1873 in Edinburgh, his mother Margaret Keith died between 1873 and 1881, as her husband Henry is back in London at the 1881 census listed as a widower.

In the Surrey, England, Admissions to Brookwood and Holloway Mental Hospitals, 1867-1900. He is admitted on 8 Oct 1893 to Holloway Sanatorium, Virginia Water, Surrey. Details of the entry are: 1212 admission number, Alfred Hoare age 20, previous place of abode - Skindles Hotel, Bath Road, Taplow. By whose authority sent - Henry Hoare.

This must be the son Alfred as in the 1891 census Henry Hoare is living with his family at Skindles Hotel, Taplow, Buckinghamshire. (spelling looks like Skindles?)

Yes. She died in Edinburgh on 4 December 1875 of delirium and nervous fever.

Yes, spot on. His father ran Skindles Hotel in Taplow. Alfred was there with his father and siblings in 1881.

Thank you, and well found. So the boy who died in Devon in 1891 isn't him. But I have failed to find him in the 1891, 1901 or 1911 census.

Following on from this Alfred was discharged from the Sanatorium 2 months later on 30 December 1893.

Thank you.

I've been looking at Mary Wyllie Hoare or Caudell. Not straightforward because the name is sometimes transcribed or indexes as Candell. Born 5 December 1868, married John Henry Caudell (1870-1953), pawnbroker, in 1895, died 21 October 1934.

There were three children

John Harry Caudell, born 1896, attended nautical training college, HMS Worcester at Greenhithe, killed in an accident at 211th Training Depot Station, Royal Air Force, on 8 July 1918.

Mary Elizabeth M Caudell, born 1897, no trace found after 1911 (so far)

Violet Emma Jessie Caudell, born 22 March 1902, married William Osmond Quick (1899-1960), gents' hairdresser, in 1929, died 23 August 1979. No children found in FreeBMD index.

The curious thing is that in 1911 Mary and her two daughters were living with her father and sister at Taplow, and I have not found any trace of John Henry in 1911. In 1934, less than three months after Mary's death, John Henry married Ruby Lumley-Rogers (1888-1973).
