Red Lion Inn, Love Lane , Spital
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 05:51 GMT (UK) »
First time Red Lion found is 1856/57 and continued each year until 1864/65 when the Aberdeen Post Directory has Red Lion at 8 West North St- Love Lane site not mentioned.
My GGG parents, Alexander and Marjory Hay are listed in 1841 Census as living at Love Lane. Census states he was a mason.
However, Post Directory starting 1840/41lists him as spirit dealer. He died 1841-1846 as she married James Ross in 1846.
From 1844/45 until 1863/64, Mrs Hay/Mrs.Ross and James Ross were at the address as spirit dealers or as Red Lion.
Any more information appreciated.

A minor point, but there's a newspaper reference of 1848 to some land for sale west of and fronting onto Spital Road in the vicinty of Love Lane, some of the land being immediately south of the Red Lion Inn, so it looks as if it was around in 1848.

It's also up for sale in 1876, described as Red Lion Inn and adjoining house.

The address is no. 69, Spital.

It's also up for sale 6 years previously described in a lot comprising 2 houses on the west side of the Spital, known as the Red Lion Inn and Spital Hall, both in ruins, together with a vacant 100 ft long piece of land immediately to the south. There is also mention of the location being in the vicinity of a new road to Sunnybank, so it looks as if the immediate area was in a phase of re-development.

Also up for sale in February 1864 - this would maybe tie in with the last date for Mr Ross?

It's still there. you will find it in "Google maps"

Just search "Spittal, Aberdeen" and use street view. You will see St Peters lane running down beside it. It's just South (50 yards) of Orchard Street. There used to be a brilliant chipper just across te road from the pub. I lived just down the road at the other side of King Street.

Malky
I only added some info in original post.
A mate and wife went to inn last year and sent photos of inside and out. Inside appears original but exterior has had renovations.

The current one obviously is newer than the Love Lane one, which would have been a half of a mile away. I was brought up in that area, and always knew the Red Lion as being where it is now. This post has added to my knowlege of that part of Aberdeen, a part which I thought that I knew.
I learn something new every day.
