SOLVED What does "issue" mean on headstone?
« on: Thursday 29 November 12 09:59 GMT (UK) »
Was wondering if anyone out there can answer this question.
I have a headstone and at the bottom it says "ISSUE 5 sons & 3 daughters".
Does this mean that the parents who are on the headstone are survived by the above number of children or does this mean the number of children that they had.
Many thanks
Diane

As far as I know, "Issue" means total number of children born. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Issue_%28legal%29

As i understand it 'ISSUE' is the number of children they had in total - regardless of whether they are still alive or not at the time

Hi, as said above "Issue" means the number of children they would have had.

Many thanks for your replies. This is what I thought but what was throwing me was the fact that the BIVRI records show 9 children being born - 6 males & 3 females. On closed inspection it appears that I was reading 5 instead of 6!

You will often see in wills and other legal documents, that someone 'died without issue' which means they had no children.
