Hi Clare,
 The ryerson index http://ryersonindex.net/search.php gives an index of death notices and you can ask volunteers for a look-up.   I used a private resource.

  Also sometimes you can be lucky and find the edition in google news archives http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=lL5f5cZgq8MC
but that date isn't available

   By the way he first appears on ER in 1943 - which gives us a time frame for his arrival.  And he is not living with Elizabeth in 1963 - haven't seen him on ER with her but they were moving and may have forgotten to register.

There are some biggish gaps there - wonder if he went somewhere else  ... and married there?
