I'm doing my nut trying to find this family in the 1881 census.

William Henshaw Pender, born Stockport, 1848
James Pender, born 1876, Salford
Joseph Twynham Pender, born 1878, Salford
Frances Elizabeth Pender, born 1880, Salford

William died in 1886, and I have the three children with their grandmother in 1891, and I have William's parents and siblings in all the relevant years, but try as I will I cannot find this family in 1881. I don't know the mother's name, or when they were married, but apart from that I have all the birth references from FreeBMD. Maybe someone with the LDS CD-ROM set, or access to another index/transcription, might be able to find them?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

For some reason it looks like they're under GUIDES!
Look for Joseph Twynham Guides on A*try.

William died in 1886, and I have the three children with their grandmother in 1891

It would appear that Elizabeth Hedges Pender (nee Glass) then remarried:

Marriage: 24 Jan 1887 (after Banns) at St George, Hulme, Manchester, Lancashire
John Cheetham, aged 24, Bachelor, Waiter, 24 Dover St - Father: John Cheetham, Packer
Elizabeth Hedges Pender, aged 31, Widow, Tailoress, 24 Dover St - Father: Alexander Glass, Wood Turner
Witnesses: William Thomas Williamson & Esther Williamson

And the reason why the children are living with their grandmother in 1891 is probably:

Deaths Dec 1890
CHEETHAM Elizabeth Hedges - aged 35 - Salford 8d 102

Thank you both very much - that's much more than I could have hoped for. No wonder I was having trouble finding them.

PS The Genealogist did better than FamilySearch with the transcription of the 1881 census - they had the surname as Paider, but as their search does not cope with wildcards I was searching for either p* or pe* or pen* so naturally it failed to find the family. Using the Joule Street address worked perfectly. I can see why FamilySearch read it as Guides, however.
