Just a thought - if Elizabeth lived just four more years, there would be a death certificate. Have you looked for that?

It might also be worth looking for John Orr and Robert Murray in later censuses. They are likely to be the illegitimate children of Alexander's sister(s), and if you could find (a) marriage(s) and/or death(s) of John and/or Robert it would tell you the name(s) of the sister(s) and whether or not they were still living, and/or whom they married. Then their death certificates would tell you about their, and therefore Alexander's, parents.

No I haven't looked for that. I am new to all of this and it makes my head hurt! Like navigating a maze in the dark. I think I should build an online tree to see whether it fits with anyone else's.
It's the first time I have come across some of these names and still wanted to confirm Alexander's parents name, which we seem to have now done.
I am so grateful for all this help. I must put aside a week to write it all out and research more links...

You may find that building your tree online, and viewing the data, is agonisingly slow, depending on which of the many web sites you decide to use. It is usually much quicker and easier to build and correct your tree offline using a genealogy program, of which there are several available. You can export from your offline tree to an online tree using the GEDCOM system for exchanging date. All decent genealogy programs are GEDCOM-compatible, and if you come across an online place that doesn't accept GEDCOMs, just go somewhere else.

The William Gunn who m. Ann Campbell was in the Military as was the William b. 1800 to Margaret Wilson.

#WILLIAM GUNN (1) (b. Thurso) m. 1771 #ANNE CAMPBELL (b. 1746 at Ayr, Ayr). Ann 2nd daughter of Ronald Campbell of Wick. Married in Barbados.

There is also a record of a William Gunn marrying Katharine Campbell in 1771 at Wick & another in the same year & also at Wick marrying an Elizabeth Taylor.

#WILLIAM GUNN  (2) (b. 1774 Thurso) m #MARGARET WILSON at Ayr, Ayr. 24/8/1799. Died in Barbados in childbirth. No other details although they did live, as part of a posting, on Reunion Island. William was in the Military & it is not known whether he was posted to Northern Island or went there to live.

Any help would be fantastic.

I am also searching for info on William Gunn and Margaret Wilson who were married in Ayr on 24.8.1799.
(I have lots of info on descendants of William Gunn 1800-1868 in Tasmania, Australia)
