Anne b 1831 Andover d ??
Thomas b 1833 d ??
James b 1835 d ??
Martha Jane b 1839 d 1860 Hampshire
George b 3.7.1842 Cholderton died 18.10.1915 Sydney Australia my 2 X Great Grandfather.

Alison,
I can't find either William or Elizabeth on the HGS baptism CD (does cover Amport) or the marriage CD. Ancestry does have them in the 1841 census (enumerated as DEBTFORD) at Amport:
William age 40 Ag Lab born in county
Elizabeth age 40 born in county
Richard age 12 born in county
Anne age 9 born in county
Thomas age 6 born in county
James age 5 born in county
Martha age 1 born in county
This doesn't really help except to confirm they were born in Hampshire c1801.

Thanks Peter, yes I forgot to say that I had found them on the 1841 Census also but didn't know where to look for births, deaths or the marriage. Thank you for your efforts  ;)

Alison

There is an ELIZABETH ADAMS baptised 22DEC1799 at Grateley [next door to Amport] d/o WILLIAM & JANE

There are 9 Williams born at Amport over 3 year period either side of 1800 The only likely looking one is 19SEP1797 WILLIAM ROSE b/b s/o ELIZABETH ROSE but I couldn't find a marriage for her to a Deptford One of the other 8 may have changed names after his mother remarried but long odds. Amport is very close to the Wilts border so you may have to look there.

Good suggestion.  I found this marriage:

William Bedford otp married Elizabeth Adams of Amport 25 May 1818 at Cholderton (where son John was later baptised)

A big thank you VW and Nell  :-*
They seem like the ones I am looking for.
I believe the following information would be on the Marriage certificate. Am I correct ??
District, Church, Parish, Location,
Date of Marriage, Forename & Surnames, Ages,
Marital Conditions, Professions, Addresses,
Father's Forename & Surname, Father's Occupations, for both parties present.
Witness names, Priest/Vicar's Name,& Signature

This marriage pre-dates civil registration and so the information is not as full as you might hope for.

In accordance with Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1754, marriages were entered into pre-printed registers, three entries to a page.  The format was as follows - the words in italics are the sort of thing that would be filled in by the officiating minister

John Brown of  this Parish
bachelor/widower
and Sarah Smith of Newtown Parish
spinster/widow
were married in this Church by Banns with the consent of
...................................................this twenty-first day of
September  in the year One thousand seven ( or eight) hundred and ninety-seven
By me James Long Vicar
This marriage was solemnised between us   ) John Brown
) Sarah Smith her mark X
In the presence of   ) William Brown
         ) Thomas Heath

So no names for fathers, no occupations for fathers, there might be an occupation for the groom, but by no means guaranteed.

As soon as you go back beyond 1837, everything is much more of a detective story - weighing up the available evidence and seeing what can be proved by a process of elimination.

Thanks for the clarification Nell. So I suppose baptism's would be the only way to find the parents or would they have been listed on death certificates in the 1840's ?
