Thomas Hugh (Pugh) son of Price Hugh (Pugh) 5 Feb 1763 Llanynys.
« on: Wednesday 12 December 12 04:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for ancestors of Samuel Pugh who was baptised son of Thos Pugh June 10th 1800 in Llandewi'r Cwm Parish Church. The Library of Wales found a record in a nearby Church "Thomas Hugh (Pugh) son of Price Hugh (Pugh) 5 Feb 1763 Llanynys". This might be his parents, but I need more information. Can you help. please?

Llanynis, Llandewi'r Cwm, and Maesmynis parishes are very close to each other, a few miles south of Builth Wells.

Samuel Pugh b. 1800 married Martha Worthing in Llandewi'r Cwm in  1825. The 1841 Census has them living in Llanynis with children Thomas, Margaret, Anne, and Sarah.  They had Margaret baptised in Llanynis on 31 January 1830, Richard baptised in Maesmynis in 1842, so they seem to have been in touch with all three Parishes.

FamilySearch has a record of Thomas Pugh baptised in Llanynis on 3 February 1732,  and I have records of the Pugh family in Maesmynis going back to the 1600s

I am trying to piece my Pugh family together, and I am focussing on the Maesmynis area. They seem to have links with the Llanfillo, Llangorse, Llanfihangel Cwmdu and Talgarth Parishes as well. The 1861 Census has Thomas Pugh, one of the sons of Samuel and Martha Pugh, living in Courtloyven, Llanfillo, and my g.grandfather Samuel Pugh was living in the same house with his wife and 6 children in th 1871 Census. I have established an unbroken link to them living in Llanfihangel Nant Bran from 1712 on, thanks in large part to RootsChat, but my ggrandfather (another) Samuel Pugh moved to Llangorse from LlNB for some reason after he married Margaret Williams in 1824.

If any of this rings a bell, please let me know,

Meanwhile

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!!!!
and a PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!!!

the witnesses to the 1825 marriage could be an older brother, Thomas, and his wife. This couple were married in the same parish in 1822. Hve you tried tracing them?

Hello Osprey
Thanks for your reply.
I would like to have the details of the 1825 Marriage.  I have Thomas Pugh born 1825 Cwmdu and wife Gwenllian b 1838 Llanfilo occupying  a hopuse called Courtlwyfen Llanfilo in the 1861 Census. This was where my grandfather was living in 1871. Thomas and Gwenllian had moved to Talgarth in 1871
Where did you find the 1825 marriage? and can you send me what you have regarding Thomas and his wife, married 1822

Thanks for your help

think you have what I found on Thomas & Mary, their marriage!  ::)

You can access the marriage register via FindMyPast

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KCK8-D6T

Not many marriages in the parish, so Thomas & Mary's marriage is on the same double page of register. Mary is also a Pugh, so she could be Samuel's sister, rather than Thomas being his brother.

If this is her baptism, father is Howell

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KCVB-3LR

haven't spotted Thomas & Mary as yet in 1841...

Hello Osprey,

Thanks for the heads-up on the FindMyPast records. Lucky that both Thomas and Samuel's marriages are on the same page!

Samuel's father was Thos Pugh, so if Mary's was Howell Pugh it seems likely that Thomas and Samuel were brothers. Or is my reasoning faulty?

So Thomas would probably have been baptised in 1795 or thereabouts..

I'll keep checking for clues!

Thanks

Hi!

The Library nof Wales has a reference to a marriage bond in 1794. Could this be the Thomas who baptised Samuel in 1800?

PUGH, Thomas, farmer, Llangynog, BRE.  1794, Oct 11.  At   Ll.  Margaret Jones.  B.  57/154

Cheers,

Hi,

Samuel Pugh put his birthplace down as Llangynog in the 1851 Census,

Married to Martha

But his age finds him born in 1803, three years after he was baptised!!!
