Catholic Baptisms c 1869 Lambeth area
« on: Tuesday 06 July 04 23:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am unable to locate my grandfathers birth certificate, despite an intense and expensive search.

As he was raised Catholic, the below article was of interest to me, and I would appreciate any help.

"Two first steps are always useful:
1.   Find a copy of the current Catholic Directory in your local library or in the Chancery Office of the local Catholic Diocese.  This lists all Catholic churches in England and Wales.  With this you can locate the church you want and write to the parish priest.

2.   If you get no reply, you should then write to the archivist or the bishp of the diocese (the Catholic Directory will give you the address) and ask if the registers of the particular church have been deposited.

If both these steps fail, write to the Catholic Record Society, 5-24 Lennox Gardens, London SW1X0DQ"

The only information I have on Henry JAMES birth in about 1869 is given on his marriage, death, will as LONDON (just a small village) and as Lambeth on the 1871 census.

How would I find the Catholic Directory mentioned above from Arizona, USA?  Inter-library loan perhaps?

Regards
Valerie

Hi Valerie,
a quick search on the net
http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/crs/
but I don't think this will help from a quick glance they do not offer help with regard to family history research.
I googled - and came up with
http://www.catholic-history.org.uk/crs/
I think St.George's Cathedral Southwark might be the one you want, Lambeth is  most probably  a local parish of the Southwark Cathedral.
another site but I didn't explore
http://www.churchontheweb.com/links/catholicdirectories.htm
this one looks promising
http://www.catholic-church.org.uk/
from there found
http://www.southwark-rc-cathedral.org.uk/cathedral/st%20george.htm
If these are of no use I would be happy to visit the library and see what I can find but it would be next Monday, unless someone else offers? I'm not sure if all libraries have the Directory, so I may need to order it too, am happy to do so just it takes time, from looking on the net there are separate directories for the USA and UK

Hi Valerie,
Found another link that may be of interest
http://www.gendocs.demon.co.uk/cath.html
This gives a list  of  Victorian Churches in London,  the principal Roman Catholic Churches, includes dates etc.
Hope your search is going well,
Pauline.
