Alfred Hope HELP PLEASE
« on: Saturday 15 December 12 23:59 GMT (UK) »
For a long while now, Ive been desperately researching my paternal grandfather Alfred Hope, but there are blocks at every turn.  I could really do with some help from a kind fellow family historian.
Information so far: Born c. 1894 possibly Worcester,  married Ethel Soley in Hereford 1914/5, father John Hope.  According to marriage cert he was a driver in the Royal army service corps based at Aldershot. I have checked war records online but there is no sign of him.  Like so many soldiers, he was gassed and suffered shell shock. As far as I know he disappeared from the family home. My father was born in 1924 and so it was sometime after that. He lived in Bosbury near Ledbury Herefordshire on his return from the war.
I have found a birth for an Alfred Hope in Worcester around the right time but the father is an Alfred not a John.  There is an Alfred born to a Ellen Hope in Ledbury again around the right time. Apparently she married her lodger John Simmonds ( not Hope but not impossible I know).
All I need is that one clue that puts me on the right road.
Would ordering my dad's birth certificate give me anything more?
I would be so grateful for some help   :)

Hi,
Do you have Johns occupation from the marriage certificate, or an address at time of marriage for Alfred?

My gut instinct is that he is the Ledbury man, son of Ellen Hope who later married John.   Right now I can't think how to prove it.

I agree Annette. Looking at the 1911 free index I think† the same family are all down as Symonds.
Any witnesses on the marriage certificate?

I have found a birth for an Alfred Hope in Worcester around the right time father is Alfred not a John.†

You could possibly eliminate Alfred Hope b1893 d1952 Worcester with father named Alfred - public tree on Ancestry has these details
mother named as Eliza Ralley,
wife named as† Grace Maude Bell b1982 d1981
children Ernest Alfred b1922 d2000, Donald George b1925 d1966 & Beryl Jean b1929 d1973

† There is an Alfred born to a Ellen Hope in Ledbury again around the right time. Apparently she married her lodger John Simmonds ( not Hope but not impossible I know).

Ellen Hope &† John Simmonds are together on the 1891 census

1891 RG12; Piece: 2052; Folio: 7; Page: 8
Homend Street Ledbury
Ellen Hope single Head† 29 Ledbury Herefordshire
John Simmonds single boarder 30 Halesowen Worcestershire Gen. Labourer

Possible birth entries for Ellenís two sons

Alfred Hope Jun 1892 Ledbury vol 6a page 458

Harry Hope Mar qtr. 1896 Ledbury vol6a page 420

The only way to see if John Simmonds is named as their father is by obtaining a b/c

Thank you all for your help.
The Alfred in Wolverhampton fits the bill with the names and yet my gut instinct says that it is the Ledbury Alfred. There must have been some reason why Alfred was in the Herefordshire area when he met my grandmother who was in service in Hereford at the time. Another thing was that a relative once told me there was some kind of mystery or secret within the Hope family history.  I know from freebmd that John and Ellen eventually married.  Also my dad's brother was called Alfred H Hope  ( could they have named him after Harry ). Think my detective brain is in auto drive.  I just wish I could find some solid proof of this.
Thanks once again
