specific Goucestershire inquest
« on: Saturday 22 December 12 16:04 GMT (UK) »
I have found the inquest on the body of Benj Painter on 04. 04. 1830 at Northleach Prison (Gloucestershire inquests on line ) and have established that he was not an inmate there. Does anyone know of any place where I might get full details of this inquest please

How have you established that he was not a prisoner?

Hi,

First place to try would be the county archives; survival of inquest files is very patchy unfortunately.

Ah, I see that Victor looked on the database at the Archives. That is not 100% reliable, as my 5xgreat grandfather died in Gloucester Gaol, and his death is documented in the Governor's Journal, but he does not appear in the database.

Thank you Jane and Nanny Jan. I shall have to wait until I can visit the archives but it would be interesting to know a little more.

I would suggest that the most likely place to learn a little more is in one of the local newspapers. It may be that the Gloucester Journal contains more than is given on the Gloucestershire inquests site, but you could also try the Cheltenham Chronicle and the Cheltenham Journal, both of which were in existence in 1830.
