Mystery Margaret?
« on: Monday 24 December 12 08:49 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me get past my roadblock?
In my family tree, I have a Thomas Woolcock, b1660 Gulval, Cornwall. d 1696 Gulval, Cornwall.
Married Ann Noy, 1683, in St Just Penwith, then married Margaret Ustick, widow in 1689. also at St Just.
How can I find out Margaret's maiden name. I have spent an enormous amount of time searching though  Cornwall marriages looking for a ? Ustick (Groom) and a Margaret ? (Bride). Many other people on line, especially on Ancestry, have him married to Margaret Ustick d of John Usticke of Botallacke and Margaret Shearme, But on-line Cornish records show that Margaret married Mark Sampson.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Dear fastfusion,
Thankyou for your efforts, the marriage would have to be before she married Thomas Woolcock,
ie before 1689. So Vol 12 could be a possibility. I will follow it up.
Thankyou

I wondered whether looking for Margaret after Thomas's death might help ...

Possibly she was the Margaret Woolcock who married Christopher Penberthy in 1698 in St Just in Penwith
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=marriages&id=839765
and died in 1717 in St Just in Penwith
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/more-info/?t=burials&id=582406
That couple had daughter Sibella in 1699; Christopher died in 1728. (Just looking for something that would give an idea of Margaret's age).

I might wonder whether the info that she was a widow is accurate. A Margaret Ustick was baptised in St Just in Penwith in 1670 and would be a reasonable candidate for that 1689 marriage ... although there is a Margaret Ustick marriage in that parish in 1691 ... Available parish records aren't showing a marriage of a Margaret to a Mr Ustick or a death of a Mr Ustick in the right time frames.

Thanks for your input, I have printed the information you have pointed me too. I am going to sit down and go through all the info I gathered and write it down and try to make some sense of it.
I am still no closer to an answer but I can at less narrow the field.

Hi Rod,
I've just found your post because I have been researching ancestors in Madron.  I recognize the name Margaret Ustick.  You say she was a widow.  I think she was the widow of John Ustick.  They were married on 26 Sep 1653 in St Just-in-Penwith.  If that's the case her maiden name was Shearme (Sherme).  I am struggling to pin down who her parents actually were.  The bits of the puzzle I have are these:
Parents possibly Robert and Margaret Shearme.  I do not know this Margarte's maiden name yet.
Although some report Robert as being born in Madron in April 1600 I can not find any source for this.
There are a number of Sherme's in the record but they are in the Morwenstowe, Kilkhampton area of North Cornwall.  That's a long way from Madron.  But i can find no sources for Shearmes or shermes in Madron or St Just-in-Penwith.
I hope this helps.
if you find anything else out please pass it back to me.
Kind regards,
John Grant
