McEvoy Cullenagh Ballyroan
« on: Friday 28 December 12 19:29 GMT (UK) »
My Irish family came to New Zealand in the 1930s, however, I can trace them back to my Great Grandfather Patrick McEvoy born Jan 1841 and he married Mary Doody born abt 1848 in County Kildare.    Wanting to find info re their children, etc.   Any help would be great.

Do you know when Patrick and Mary married ?
If it was 1864 or later there should be a civil marriage cert which would add a few details (assuming they were RC).

Can you give details of the name and year of birth for your direct ancestor to help start the search.

possible marriage for Patrick & Mary on the BMD INdex:

  Name: Mary Doody
  Registration district:   Abbeyleix
  Event type: Marriage
  Year: 1871
  Volume: 3 / Page: 405

a Patt M'Evoy appears with the same references. Abbeyleix is the registration district for Cullenagh townland.

I haven't located the family on the 1911 census returns yet, but no sign of them at Cullenagh townland on those returns. The older children may have married and moved elsewhere by then...

wonder if the following is a possible death for Patrick.. if so he should be on the 1911 census somewhere...

  Name: Patrick McEvoy
  Registration district:   Abbeyleix
  Event type: Death
Quarter and year:   Jan - Mar 1912
  Age: 70 (est. yob 1842)
  Volume : 3 / Page: 237

(McEvoy is a reasonably common name in the area - so this Patrick may not be the correct one...)

possibility for the son Martin in 1911 with his wife of two years Ellen Josephine and 'under 6 months' old son Patrick John

Mc Evoy household, Borris Little townland

the townland of Borris Little is near to the town of Maryborough, now called Port Laoise.

Based on the BMD Index and above census I believe Ellen's maiden name was Fitzpatrick, and they married in the Jan/Mar quarter of 1910 in Mountmellick registration district, which is immediately north of Abbeyleix district.
