Jane DOBB or DOBBS born 1869 Hucknall
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 21:10 GMT (UK) »
From family memories she was born deaf & dumb, married, her husband soon leaving her although they had a daughter. This is borne out by censuses,in 1890 she married a JOSEPH HARDY & in 1891 census appears living alone with her widowed mother Sophia.A daughter Mary Sophia Hardy was born in 1892 & in 1901 census she & her daughter were again living with her mother. In 1911 they were living with her brother John.
Would be most interested if anyone can give any information on this Joseph Hardy, maybe details from the 1890 marriage.
I believe Jane Hardy died in 1926.

Hello.... :)
Just to confirm.....

Marriage - Hucknall Torkard St Mary
JOSEPH HARDY & JANE DOBB - 5th April 1890

From what you have said re Jane being abandoned by her husband , then maybe the 1926 death may not be hers as from that burial record at Hucknall cemetery has her description as "miners wife".

Now that I have looked on the three census that Jane Hardy is on; I see she always says she is married.....if no one else can have a look at the marriage details before I do - will try and take a look some time after next week if that's ok?..... :)

Hello Dizzifish
Very many thanks for your interesting replies.
Should be most grateful if you could look up the marriage details, a way of finding out more about Joseph Hardy. I believe divorce was very uncommon around 1900,so presumably he shouldn't have remarried!
Thanks again

Jane Hardy's burial record, 1926, shows her as having lived at 14 Gilbert Street Hucknall ,and was wondering who is listed as living there in local street directories of that time. This could establish if I have the right burial.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello Colin..... :)

Here are the marriage details you were after.... and a couple of others if you don't have them already?

You might need to start a new look up for the 1926 electoral roll details as I couldn't find those years in our local library...... you need someone to check Nottingham Archives or Nottingham Library; hopefully someone can do it for you.

Kind Regards

Sheila

Thanks to marriage details can trace Joseph Hardy (born 1868 Hucknall miner) in the 1871 and 1881 censuses.Cannot find him in the 1891 census,a year after his marriage, and about 6 months before the birth of his daughter,or in the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
Would he have taken another name?
Can anyone help?
