Chipping Barnet: Did this Pc die in line of duty?
« on: Monday 31 December 12 00:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Hoping to solve a little bit of a mystery here, so here goes!

Ezekiel John Tanner 1838-1865, my 4x gt uncle & brother of my 3xgt grandfather George William Tanner died aged 27 in Chipping Barnet. In 1861 he was a Police Constable in Lambeth but married Elizabeth Spicer on 3rd Sept 1864 in Chipping Barnet. Elizabeth in 1861 was shown as 23 yr old Manager & Shopwoman in a Fancy Repository on Chipping Barnett High Street nr the Kings Head.

A son Thomas Caleb Tanner was born in 3rd quarter 1865 & Ezekiel John's death was registered in the 4th quarter of 1865.

In 1871 Elizabeth Tanner (Nee' Spicer) is still at the shop on Chipping Barnet High Street, as a Fancy Shopkeeper, with son Thomas Caleb & her mother Elizabeth Spicer snr.

I am unable to afford certificates at present, and would like to see if there is any other way of finding out about his death, was it in the line of duty?. What newspapers (if any) covered the area at this time & where could they be accessed. Also how would i go about finding out if he transferred from the Lambeth area to Chipping Barnett?

The other problem i have is that Elizabeth Tanner & son Thomas Caleb disappear off the face of the earth after the 1871 Census, apart that is from a death record for her mother Elizabeth Spicer snr in 1874 reg dist Barnet. Could sks see if they could find them anywhere as after many hours of searching i have so far failed to find any trace of them.

The two Chipping Barnet censuses in question are:
1861 - RG9/788/36/11 Schedule no25
1871 - RG10/1332/9/7 Schedule no30

Kind regards

David

Hi David,

There's a death for Thomas Caleb Tanner St Pancras 1880 aged 11 which is probably your man. There's also an Elizabeth in 1881 also in St Pancras aged 42 so possible.

Hi fizzix,

Many thanks indeed for your reply!

Unfortunately the Thomas Caleb Tanner death in 1880 was actually Ezekiel John's nephew (son of his brother George William Tanner (my 3x gt grandfather)) & the Thomas Caleb i'm looking for's cousin! If that makes any sense! :D

However, the Elizabeth in 1881 is certainly worth a look!

Many thanks again!

Kind regards

David

Oh well. Isn't it annoying when you have a nice unusual name & they go and use it twice  ;D ;D ;D
Ancestors, who'd  have 'em?????????????

Hi fizzix,

I know what you mean! Both Thomas Caleb Tanner & Ezekiel John Tanner appear to  be family names to a degree, 3 times & twice repectively.

I'll just have to keep looking!

Many thanks.

Kind regards

David
