*** And when you DO buy a Cert, please put a postem on FreeBMD! ***
(this is my periodical reminder to everyone - if we all did this, there'd be a huge amount of extra info on freeBMD)
regards eadaoin

Sounds a good idea,

But how do you do this eadaoin?

Romilly.

It's a very good idea.

Just click the red 'info' button and scroll down a little.  You can put everything there that's on the cert - names, dates, addresses, witnesses etc etc.   And if you find an entry with a postem there's a little extra sign by it (have forgotten what it is).

from freebmd:  When an entry has one or more Postems associated with it, the symbol  (an enveope)  will appear beside the entry. Click on this symbol or on the Info button to bring up the information about the entry which will include the Postem or Postems associated with the entry.

Postems are such a good idea.  If you have a death cert relating to someone whose marriage was pre-Civil Registration, then add a note of that to the FreeBMD entry for the death registration.  Every little helps!

Which areas and names are you researching? If you add some information some roots chatters may have access to the parish records in that area and could provide you with a photo copy of the parish record entry at a fraction of the cost of a certificate. I have done this a lot for marriage certificates. A photo copy is only 50p at my local archive.

It's also particularly disappointing, (& expensive) when the Cert you have ordered turns out to be wrong:-(

I ordered 10 looking for a Birth for my late Grandfather, (William James Wilson, 1860 - 1937) and not one of them fitted the info I already had!

I've had to call a halt now...

Romilly :-\

Sometimes if you order from the local office rather than the GRO they are kind and will check details first for you.    If you know the mother was Mary or whatever you can say so and they will send back your cheque if it is wrong.  Assuming you send an sae.   Not all of them but it is worth a try.

silvery told you how to do it - remember to do both parties for a marriage!

If you want to see some postems, go to FreeBMD and search for Marriages GRAY in Bromley between 1920 and 1935 ... I think there are 3 of mine ... by clicking on the envelope, you can see what I posted.
