JAMES HARNES (HARMES?) AND LOUISA DRAKE MARRIAGE
« on: Thursday 10 January 13 16:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I came across marriage banns ending 12 Nov 1876, St Peters, Hammersmith for a
James HARNES and Louisa DRAKE.  Unfortunately, I can't find an actual marriage for them.

It is all a bit of a curved ball because my gt gt grandfather is James HARMES b1855 Hammersmith. He has a brother called John HARMES who actually married a Louisa DRAKE on 7 MAY 1977.
Their banns ended on 6 May 1877 St Peters, Hammersmith.
(Just to confuse things Louisa's name at birth is Dinah Louisa DRAKE.
I have her birth certificate and the 1877 marriage certificate to John HARMES.)

My James HARMES went on to marry Mary Ann COWLAND in 1879.

What I am wondering is whether James HARNES is really James HARMES being a spelling mistake on Ancestry? Was James originally going to marry Louisa DRAKE but maybe changed his mind so brother John jumped in? ;)
Or there again it could be a totally separate HARNES and DRAKE marriage?

James and John's father was Edward HARMES who was a tailor.
Louisa's father was Thomas DRAKE who was a waterman.

Carole  :)

It is difficult to decide what his surname on the banns actually reads

Hi

Thanks I have the marriage banns for James and Mary Ann.  They separated and she went on to marry John Pierpoint in 1891.

Mind you, I think there was a bit of bigamy going in the 1891 marriage because she states that she is a widow on the banns for her and John Pierpoint.  However, James is living with his sister in 1891 so he was very much alive and kicking  ;)

Just had another look at the record on ancestry and magnified it but I can't make out what it says.

I am wondering if the marriage was cancelled  as there are marriage dates next to the others?

Do you think the name is James HARMES rather than HARNES?  :)
