Thank you for looking up the 1910 Census.  I guess this could still be the Annie M who is in the 1900 Census.  It would probably be a bit unusual to have another Annie M Smith at the Retreat born in England around the same year, 10 years later residing at the same home.

Husband William Smith was aged in his 80's in 1910.  The 1910 US Census for William mentions that he is married. The Washington Times 1912 obitiuary for William Robertson Smith mentions his wife had been in a mental institution for the past 20 years but does not actually mention she has passed away although the article that Erato found mentions that William "had no family or heirs".

Would it be possible to obtain a copy of William's Will?

In the 1900 census she is Anna M Smith, age 47 (b 1853) and  married, in 1910  she is 67 (b 1843) and widowed? It would be unlikely but I suppose that it is possible that two separate women born in England were admitted in a ten year period. I wonder if it worth contacting the institution for some further information?

Regards, Jo

The "district of Columbia Deaths, 1874 to 1956" index on Family Search has a death for an Annie M Smith, b1844 on the 9 Jul 1913, the death occurred in Baltimore, Maryland. So fairly safe to assume (though certainly not proved) that these are all the same Annie! I'm not sure how you go about it but a copy of this death certificate and/or William's would be very useful.

Regards, Jo  :)

Thanks Jo for the 1913 date for the death date of an Annie M Smith.  I will try and see if I can get a death certificate for either Annie or William.  His obituary gives quite a bit of detail about his illness.

Regards Kay

I have just found  a site on the internet where I can order certificates for Baltimore, Maryland.  I have made some enquiries first to find out exactly what are on US death certificates.  I have ordered quite a few from the UK but not from the United States, so am not aware of what to expect.

The problem may be that by the time she died, after years in a mental institution, there was no one left who knew the details of her parentage and so the death certificate may not have much information.

Make sure that you go through the Maryland State Archives and look for what they say for Baltimore specifically.  Sometimes, there are websites that charge more for vital records than the government would.
