Alderney marriage.
« on: Saturday 12 January 13 19:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
Is there a marriage registered in Alderney for a George Andrew Johns about 1858.
I have no other details.
Any help appreciated.

If he is the George Andrew Johns b Cornwall 1837 - mother Agnes - then he was still unmarried in 1861 and living with Agnes in Alderney

Hi Carole.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes that is my George.  On the 1861 census he is with his mum, Agnes, and also a "brother" Henry who is three years old.
In 1871 George and brother Henry (now eleven) are in Brighton.  It seemed strange to me that why George took Henry to Brighton...unless Henry was his son. On the 1871 census they are both stated as being  boarders so that did not help.
Again thanks for your reply.

Hi.

Thanks for your replies.
This 1891 census I have.  However after this date the family disappear. Agnes died in 1893.
I may have found Henry senior in 1901 as being a bootmaker  in Aldershot. He is transcribed as Henry John aged 50 born Soho London. (RG 13/610). However Jane and little Henry have completely disappeared. (  Janes maiden name was  Jane Garard and she married Henry in 1885.)
Have tried BMD but nothing shows for either of them.

Again many thanks   Dud.

How can this be the right Henry??

1891 - Aged 33 but 50 in 1901

1891 b Channel Islands but Soho in 1901

1891 - shopkeeper - 1901 bootmaker

Yes its all very confusing.

On the 1901 census I think his age could have been round up by his employer as he lived on the job.
With regards birth place I have found it not unusual for ancestors to change their place of birth. As he had lived in Soho he may have told his employer that he came from there. On the 1911 census he makes a point of saying  St Anns Soho
With regards his job he could well have been a bit of a drifter.
I have been looking for Henry Johns the bootmaker on census prior to 1901 and absolutely nothing ties up. This man was my grandfather and I am trying to link him to the Henry, who was married to Jane, on the 1891 census , possibly in sheer desperation.
