Marriage licences are still issued today for marriages in the Church of England where it is not possible to have banns called.  There is little difference in when they are required from 200 years ago.  Marriage licences rarely survive as they are given to the officiating priest who is not required to preserve them.

Marriage bonds ceased to be required in 1823 although the associated allegations are still used to obtain a licence.  They are indexed until 1839 for some of the bodies that issued licences e.g. those issued by York, but after that date the marriage certificate is regarded as a better source document.
