Hello fellow chatters
I am trying to piece together the links between SPRAY/SPREY/SPREAY families in Nottinghamshire in the 1700s. I only have an old copy of the NottsFHS cds (will upgrade when it's available!) so any help would be much appreciated.
I have acopy of a will written Sept 1742 by Samuel Spray, gentleman, of Nottingham. The will was proved in 1744. It namechecks the following, and I'll put a second post to explain the links I've found so far; in the meantime I'm no further forwards with the SPRAYS!
1. Wife (nameless!)
2. Sister Curtis
3.Neice Hannah, wife of Joseph Rose, and 2 sons of hers
4. Isaac Herring (? name unclear) and his 3 children by Samuel's neice Catherine, who had died. Isaac's oldest daughter is apprentice to a mantua maker.
5. Neice Mary, wife of Theophilus Allcock; her oldest son Joseph Martin, 2 other sons Samuel and George Martin, and 3 more children by Theophilus. George is apprenticed to a tailor.
6. Brother Joseph Curtis
7. A list of Sprays with no place or age given - Mary, Elizabeth, George, William, Henry, Samuel
8. William Spray of Hucknall
9.A another different William Spray of Hucknall, needlemaker
10. Thomas Spray of Hucknall
11. William Spray of Basford
12. Brother John Ellis and his daughter Susannah Smith
13. James Ellis
14. Brother William Shelton of Lenton and his 3 children
15. Samuel son of Richard Harrison
16. Elizabeth Bower of Mansfield
17. George Townrow,widow of Papplewick
Such a lot of names and clues! But how do they fit together? I presume the Sprays are related but how?
