Knaresborough Newspapers 1946
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 05:15 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a death notice or a newspaper report of the death of Francis Kitchener HOLLINSHEAD who died at age 31 in June Q 1946 (Knaresborough 9A 137).

Family lore has it that Kit died in a motorcycle accident and that he was a depatch rider in the army during WW2.

Which newspapers would have (potentially) covered the crash? The Northern Echo?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards
Kevin

(Knaresborough was in the West Riding until 1974 and is now in North Yorkshire)

His death certificate will show the cause of death ... this is the GRO reference ...

Francis K Hollinshead
Born abt 1915
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1946
Age at Death 31
Knaresborough Volume 9a Page 137

Certificates can be ordered online from the GRO.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I'm not sure which local newspaper would have reported the event, probably the Harrogate Advertiser (archives at Harrogate Library) or the Yorkshire Post (archives at Leeds Library).

He served as a Corporal in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and is buried in Ripon Cemetery ...

Paul

Many thanks. I already had his death details but I cannot afford to acquire the certificate at the moment that is really why I was seeking a news article.

Thank you for the links I shall investigate them. I am not sure why I didn't realise that Knaresborough was in the West Riding based on his death GRO entry but I guess I am so used to it being North Riding that I just wasn't thinking clearly :)

Thanks again
Kevin

Can you post the date of death, please, and I will try the Northern Echo archives (in the next couple of days, snow permitting ;))

Looked at the Northern Echo and the Darlington & Stockton Times but couldn't find any reference to Francis in the days following his death, sorry.  A couple of the issues were very poor and one front page completely unreadable on the microfilm so can't say 100% that there was nothing.

Tillypeg

Thank you so much for trying. He usually went by Kitt (or so I believe), I am not even sure that he died in a motorcycle wreck or if that is just family lore.

If he died in another district I assume it would have been registered there rather than Knaresbrough? I guess the certificate is the only way to know for sure? :(

Best regards and many thanks again

Kevin,

The death certificate will certainly state the place of death and the cause of death, so you should find out if the family story of the motorbike accident is true.  Also may mention if an inquest was held.

Hi Kevin,

I was at Middlesbrough Reference Library today and looked at the Evening Gazette to see if there was anything about FKH's accident/death.  Strangely the issue for Saturday 8th June 1946 had not been filmed.  There was nothing in the 10th & 11th, sorry.  Did you eventually order the death cert to see if the family lore was true?
