HARWOTH in Oldham
« on: Wednesday 16 January 13 08:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have a Sarah Howarth (or Harworth) born in Oldham about 1841. Her father was William and he was a Cotton weaver.

Sarah was married to William Jackson in 1861 in Oldham.

This is basically all I have on the Howarth's. I cannot find them on the 1841 or 51 census records. I know where Sarah Jackson is in later census records before they leave for New Zealand in 1877.

I can't find William in any records apart from the marriage certificate of Sarah.

HELP!?
Claire

Claire -  sorry lots of questions, but these are common names. Were any of the marriage witnesses possible relatives of either of the couple - if so their names might help? What age did they give? Was that consistent with the later data you have? Have you got either in 1861? What occupations did the couple have & what was William's father's name & occupation?

I suspect that 'your' sarah could be the illegitimate-looking one b in 1840, in which case, she could be enumerated under a step-father's surname.

You've at least 4 candidates there in births..

What address was given at 1861 marriage, and what names witness?

(registrar-attended marriage in 1861)

Pauline - that's the one I spotted, I think in 1851 & 61 given as granddaughter; there's also a grandson (ie brother or cousin) partly why I asked about witnesses rather than perhaps suggesting a very red herring!

I don't think it's that one as she seems to be around in 1871:
1871
Sarah Ann HOWORTH
 4094/ 87/ 22

I think I've lost the plot.

I thought they were this couple:
1871
4101/ 65/ 16

but they're still around in 1881
1881
Oldham
Wm Jackson age 41 Mechanic
Sarah A Jackson age 40
4011/ 51/ 45

 ???

I went on the one registered with a MMN of Howarth.
yes, we need more information from the 1861 marriage.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies. I am currently at work, so I can't look at the marriage certificate of Sarah Howarth and William Jackson. From memory the witnesses were not either Jackson or Howarth.

I know that both Sarah and William (Jackson) were living in Lees Road in Oldham and I believe she was a cotton worker. I thought that since the wedding was in Nov 1861, and the same year as the census records, that she at the very least would be in the records but alas no (I don't think William Jackson is either who was a Bricklayer...he was born in Down, Ireland).

I did find a Sarah Howarth born in Whittle in 1842 which could be her but I can't confirm it. I am pretty sure it has Oldham as her place of birth, but it is nearby, so it could be her.

I will look up the marriage cert when I get home and look for the witnesses.

Thanks

Did you think this was Sarah in 1871:
1871
4451/ 82/35
Robert and Rachel Winterbottom with Boarder Sarah Jackson (and 1 yr old James)

Probably a red herring :) but:
1861
 3022/ 89/5
Robert, Rachel and Sarah Winterbottom

Marriages Jun 1852
 Dean    William Oldham    8d   871
Howarth    Rachel

Marriages Mar 1860
Dean    Rachel     Oldham    8d   809
Winterbottom    Robert
On Lancs bmd it says DEAN or LEONARD for Rachel so I don't know if it's the same person.

Good luck!

Maureen
