James was born in Bradford in 1870 and Sarah Ann in Bowling, Yorkshire in 1872. I have no idea where they were in the 1860's after their marriage and before the birth of James in 1870. I am assuming they went there for the work (for William as a Bricklayer)....

Hello,

you have them married in 1861 and leaving for NZ in 1877 but only 2 of the children born in UK.
Do you know where the children James and Sarah Ann were born in UK. They are not showing for Oldham (I don't think  :-\)

Yes, This is why I have said that Sarah Howarth was born in Oldham or Whittle (spelled incorrectly before, sorry). I still can't find any Howarth's in Whittle le Woods either.

Just catching up with that now   :)

I notice Mr Winterbottom is shown as born Saddleworth but Rachel is born Bolton and Sarah born 'Wittle' - 'Whittle le Woods??'

I am really wondering about this Rachel Dean Winterbottom. I have a feeling there may be a Dean listed as a witness on Sarah Howarth and William Jackson's marriage cert. I am going to go home shortly for lunch, so I will get it out and have a look to see the names.

Did you think this was Sarah in 1871:
1871
4451/ 82/35
Robert and Rachel Winterbottom with Boarder Sarah Jackson (and 1 yr old James)

Probably a red herring :) but:
1861
 3022/ 89/5
Robert, Rachel and Sarah Winterbottom

Marriages Jun 1852
 Dean    William Oldham    8d   871
Howarth    Rachel

Marriages Mar 1860
Dean    Rachel     Oldham    8d   809
Winterbottom    Robert
On Lancs bmd it says DEAN or LEONARD for Rachel so I don't know if it's the same person.

It all looks right to me  :)

4th March, 1860
Holy Trinity, Coldhurst
Robert Winterbottom, 34, Bachelor, Spinner, Royton Road, Father Robert Winterbottom Drawer in
Rachel Dean, 47, Widow, Weaver, Royton Road, Father James Leonard Weaver
Both made their mark
Witnesses were John Stott  (made his mark) and Isaac Berry

Yes I spent a while trying to work out where Steventon was!! William was born in Down, Ireland 1839 but his family moved to Liverpool about 1856. I assume that is why he is in that neck of the woods (ie. Oldham). I wonder if it is him anyway????
