FreeBMD has a possible marriage in 1842, MarQ Stockton &c vol 24 page 176. There are two Janes, Rutter and Summers, as the Seaton's have a son William Rutter Seaton age 5 in 1851 I would go with Jane Rutter  :)

I should add of course that the birth cert of one of the children will confirm the mothers maiden name which will make it easier to find the marriage cert which will give their fathers names, I've had a quick look but I haven't found a baptism for James yet.

Thank you Angelfish....its amazing what a fresh pair of eyes can achieve.

It looks as if James may have married twice...first Mary and then Jane Rutter. His fathers forename is given as William and I would like to tie him to William and Mary married 1807 Brotton as that would explain various family connections but as yet can find no birth record.

Thanks again for your help.

Some news. I now have confirmation via the Australian Death Index that James was the son of William Seaton and Mary Robinson. He and his family emigrated to Queensland in 1862 and he died there in 1877.

It now looks more likely that the 'May' appearing in the 1841 census is either James' sister or the wife of Robert also staying there. The child Harriet appears as daughter of Mary in the christening register but no father is given. Another mystery.

Many thanks to all for help.

That is good news, glad that you've finally tracked down his parents.

Thank you Ladyhawk. I have already got a copy of the Mates Certificate which I believe is 'my guy'. The entry for the J Seaton from Skilton gives no useful info at all.

Re the family emigrating to Australia I have now found more information in two different family tree postings apparently done by Australian descendants so lots available.

As ever I am amazed at all the helpful people online!

The 1841 census does not give relationships so it is only a guess that he is married to Mary but there is a child, Harriet, age 2 months with them and also Robert age 19.  Have you tried tracing them to see where they go?
It is an odd coincidence that they are living in Stockton St Middlesbrough and my ancestors lived there at one point too.
Penstone - can you give the reference for your James Seaton in 1851 please?   I can see another Seaton married to a Jane and born Skelton but I do not think he is yours.
