WELSH reading and writing in Yspytty Ifan Area 1760-1811.

Hi I have found a marriage bann from 1811 relating to my welsh 5 times greatgrandfather Robert Roberts (b.1786) to Jane Owen (Find my past Denbigh_4631697_4631697_00121-ROBERTS _ROBERT) and was fascinated to see that both his father Isaac Roberts (b. approx 1760) and Robert could sign their names.  Further down the page it looks as if Roberts brother also married in 1811 but he seems to be illiterate signing only with a cross.  How would I find out how prelevant literacy was amongst agricultural workers in this area, would it be linked to schooling or church attendance and would Robert being able to write denote a higher place in birth order than his brother Henry?
Many thanks in advance
L
