You can order vouchers for use on SP...http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=551&1309  ...think some libraries in Scotland still sell vouchers too....

Info re him giving birthplace as Lanarkshire came from free searches on familysearch though - Census transcripts.

The Hodgen Liddell married to Blair gives his place of birth as Lanarkshire in various Scotland census.... c1816.

Possible Liddell/Thyne marriage, albeit mistranscribed and not sourced?

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTBX-K2Q

The link regarding familysearch.org has Little and Kynne as the surnames for Hodgen  and Blair

That's why I said it seemed mistranscribed.

Yes, SP does require the purchase of credits, but it is quite good value and well worth it if you have Scottish ancestors. Is there anyone who can buy the credits on their credit or debit card, and you can pay them in cash?

For starters, I can see Hodgen's death (well there are two of them - so you have to make an educated guess as to which is yours once you purchase credits).

That marriage for Little and Kynne looks a distinct possibility (could have been misheard). Worth checking on SP.

One thing to note, his saying he was born in Lanarkshire is not necessarily correct. It is always possible that if he was born in Carlise, as suggested by an online tree, that he was brought up in Lanarkshire, so assumed he was born there.  Death certificate for him should at least confirm if the online tree is correct with parents names for him.

The 1851 is quite specific, giving a place of birth as 'Shellterton' Lanarkshire, but of course it can be the case that a person doesn't know where they were born.

Ah, it seems you have perhaps posted on several boards/forums, and were already made aware of the Census giving his PoB as Scotland rather than England and of the existence of his marriage record:

eg

http://en.allexperts.com/q/Genealogy-2028/2011/3/Liddell-Fisken.htm

It would have been helpful for you to mention this as saves duplication of research.

Judging by the numerous posts on the web re Hodgen, there has already been much debate over England, Ireland, Scotland as PoB.

Thanks Scotmum, I see that 'Hodgen Liddell' is all over the internet. Lucky I don't have an SP credits because I probably would have wasted a few getting that death certificate.  ;)
