Impossible to say without checking the original record- this is one of the problems with using online databases.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

often the individual records are not dated so can be difficult to be certain about the date. The dates may only be written in only written every so often, e.g. top of a page, or when a new year or month starts, and not since these are close to the edges they are not always visible or legible. When this occurs the date can sometimes be estimated by checking from the previous legible date.

On the IrishGenealogy system notes when they do this e.g. N/R N/R 1850 where the month and day cannot be established, or when the year is uncertain N/R N/R 1850 (ASSUMED), or sometimes  N/R 08 1850 (Based on other date information)

Sometimes I've seen records entered in registers out of sequence, so it may not be possible to be 100% certain.

Hi shane and aghadowey,

Thanks for your useful suggestions.

aghadowey, please let me know how to do research without the online databases, who i know are taking every genealogy researchers like myself for every penny or euro they can get.

I'm not having a moan, but to help all the researchers for Ireland, why can't they have the bmd index what starts 1837, just like they have to the english and welsh, then we'll be very happy :).

There's nothing wrong with using online sources but you do need to verify any information.

Civil registration of births, Catholic marriages and deaths in Ireland started in 1864 (non-Catholic marriages from 1845) so no amount of moaning will change that.

In the last few years a tremendous number of Irish resources have become available online- for example, scanned images of 1901 and 1911 census are free, FamilySearch has civil registration index (also free) and many other records for various counties are also online.
