COMPLETED General Sir John George Dartnell?
« on: Monday 04 February 13 17:02 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please confirm that the figure on the left is him? I know the photo was taken in Natal, possibly in Pietermaritzburg, at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century, probably by my Grandather, George Stratford Mardall, who was a member of the Natal Mounted Police, founded by (then) Major John Dartnell in the 1870s. Can anyone please also help by identifying any of the other figures in the photo? Thank you.

Unfortunately I have no idea who anyone in the photograph is.  However Major-General Sir John George Dartnell wrote an introduction to a book called Mounted Police of Natal which was published in 1913.  Possibly the book would have a photograph of him in it. The book was written by H.P. Holt and Dartnell and was published in 1913.

On the site www.angloboerwar.com there is a photograph of his medals which were auctioned off for 700 pounds.

Sorry I cannot be of more help. :(

Hi click on this link http://natalia.org.za/natalia.html and contact Peter Croeser, he may be able to help you. There are also a number of photographs of early Natal at this link http://www.gettyimages.com.au/Search/Search.aspx?assettype=image&artist=Natal+Witness+Archive%2fGallo+Images#1

I looked up Fishpond on Google and then entered Natal Mounted Police and this link will show the book can still be bought for $39 Australian, http://www.fishpond.com.au/advanced_search_result.php?rid=1248727298&keywords=The%20Mounted%20Police%20of%20Natal

Thank you very much indeed for your help on this subject.  I have followed up all your recommendations and have been in touch with specialists and academic authorities in Natal, who have very kindly given me the benefit of their help and advice, and the conclusion is that the figure on the left is indeed General Sir John George Dartnell.

Greetings. You may already know this by now. The others in the photograph, by extrapolation from my family details, with the exception of the gentleman at the Right are:
His wife, Clara Alicia Steer (1843-1931) and their children
Alice Gertrude (1867-1928)
Georgina Jane (1870-1940)
Isabel Mary (1872-1957)
George Bruce (1876-1946)
Sir John is my first cousin three times removed.
Regards,
Keith Dawson
