1851 has a Hannah Gladwin in the Bakewell workhouse with children Thomas 9 (b Neeston), John 6 (b Birchover), Elizabeth 3 and Mary 3 months both b Bakewell

Hannah is listed as a widow, however none of the children have mother's maiden name listed on the GRO register

Ignore this - Hannah marries and Thomas is with her on 1861

Yes, thank you.  I can see in the 1851 census that there is a 9 year old Thomas Gladwin living with a Hannah Gladwin (char woman) as head, unmarried, and several siblings in the Bakewell Union Workhouse. This would likely be the same Thomas.

The Thomas Gladwin I'm looking for gives his place of birth in all later census and military records as "Burton upon Trent," and seems to cite being born 1843/1844 ish.

With Burton and Bakewell being 35ish miles apart and the dates a couple of years out I'm not confident of taking the Bakewell Thomas Gladwin as mine......
Especially as you find Hannah and Thomas together in 1861. My Thomas is on HMS Neptune in 1861.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
James.

Hi,

Ancestry shows the entry as:

Thomas Gladwin - drummer - single - 17, Burton upon Trent, Staffs,

Like you say - HMS Neptune, in Malta - 1861.

I have his military record which also states birthplace as Burton, as does all later census.

Hmmmm.....interesting.

The only record I can find of Thomas's parents is on his marriage certificate. 4th Feb 1865
Thomas gives his profession as "Corporal - RM" and his father as "Thomas Gladwin" profession "RM"
Royal Marines.

I wonder if this James Gladwin was an uncle or any relation at all?

If you check the National Archives,

Just Google: a2a

and search for GLADWIN, Royal Marine - there are a number of hits and include

Thomas GLADWIN Age 13 years 11 months, Place of birth: Burton on trent, Admiralty, Royal Marines, etec etc.  1840-1888

James GLADWIN - Age 23, Years, Place of birth: Burton on Trent, Royal Marines, etc etc.  Discharged 1866 as an Invalid.

Also Samuel GLADWIN - Royal Marines, Bakewell Derbyshire.

Both seemed to have joined in 1848

I think Samuel is b Staunton/Stanton, Derbyshire c1819. He's to be found in the Marines in 1851 & 61

Thanks Capetown,

I'm sure you are on to something with them both being from Burton upon Trent. - and is it coincidence they are on the same ship in 1861?

I've purchased the downloads from National Archives.
James enlisted in Oct 1848 aged 23
Thomas enlisted in Feb 1858 aged 13.
This correlates with the ages in the 1861 census.

James seems to have got in some trouble during his naval time ("3 years forfeited for the sentence of a court martial in 1859).
Whereas Thomas' record shows Exemplary character throughout his career.

Thomas listed his father as "Thomas Gladwin" "RM" on his marriage certificate in 1865.
Could it be that he changed his father's Christian name if for purposes of his own career he had disassociated himself with a badly behaving dad?
