Alderton Old School House
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 09:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have found a photo which I think may include my grandfather who was born in Alderton in 1895. Does anyone recognise the building as being the Old School House. Most of the photos I can find on line show the front of the building but I think this was taken at the side.

I have been to Alderton this morning and, thanks to the kind lady who currently lives there, I have been able to confirm that this photo was definitely taken at Alderton School.
Just need to work out which of the lads is my grandfather now :D :D

I am interested in the photo of Alderton school as many of my family attended there and I have seen the school log book in the record office.  Do you have any idea when the photo was taken please? I have been trying to identify my family. Thank you.

My grandfather and his siblings were born between 1895 and 1903 and they left the village of Alderton in 1914 so I assume the photo was taken during that period. My family were the Cook family, what is your family name?

Thank you. My family, the Browns, were born 1873 to 1895 so they might not be In your picture. By 1901 they had moved to Malmesbury.
Isn't the school building lovely now,  I have been shown inside and saw the old school room and also an example of the desks they used.  The church in Alderton is very nice too.
Which family are you associated with?

Posted on behalf of Gracebarker who had sent me the message in Error.

Sarah

Thank you for reposting the message Sarah :)

Grace, I also had a tour of the school building, so kind of the current owner, She also showed me the research she had done on the school history and I gave her a copy of this photo to add to her records.

My family the Cook's lived in the village for generations and some  are buried in the churchyard. I had always assumed the photo was of my grandfather or his siblings probably early 1900s but I know their father Thomas John Cook also went to the school in the early 1870's so that is also a possibility.

The school log book made very interesting reading, hardly a day passed without at least one child getting the cane, including many of my family.

Thank you. The Browns have been there and in Luckington for a long time too. The dates I gave were for the births of my grandmother and her siblings who were the most credible to have been in the photograph, I think you are right that it is likely to be your grandfather's generation rather than any earlier given the style of photograph, and the numbers of children present in comparison with the number on roll according to the records. When I read the log book I was struck by the similarity between the school mistress's writing and that of my grandma. It is great to see your own family mentioned isn't it. They seem to have had time off due to helping with the potato picking etc. or helping to look after a new baby.  Is it name removed who is still at the school house? Her family were there when I visited in 2009.
