A little latin - Nonas Maii - COMPLETE
« on: Saturday 09 February 13 06:23 GMT (UK) »
I need help to interpret this sentance, please.
Google translate gives me only part of the answer.

“Quo tempore, defuncto eodem * {886} Vulgrino v Nonas Maii, et sepulto juxta Basilicam S. Eparchii, * {VI} v anno post eum Oliba Episcopus diem clausit ; et Anatolus in loco ejus Pontifex ordinatus, tertio anno vitam finivit.”

The year is A.D. 886.

Vulgrino, I presume is just Vulgrin.
He appears elsewhere, in the same book, as Vulgrinum & Vulgrinus. Later publications show him as Wulgrinus or Walgrinus.

At that time, the same Vulgrin, having died on the 9th of May, was buried next to the Basilica of St Eparchus. In the fifth year after that Bishop Oliba died and Anatolus was ordained Bishop in his place. In the third year (?after Oliba) he died. cb

having died on the 9th of May
May I suggest that Vulgrinus died on 3 May -- v Nonas Maii -- i.e. 5 days before the Nones.

According to the Roman Calendar, in the month of May the Nones fell on the 7th day (rather than the 9th), and the back-calculation must include the days at each end.

In March, July, October, May
the Nones fall on the seventh day.

So the Ides will be the 15th.

And you count inclusively.

Fantastic. Thankyou very much.

That has put me in the right direction for interpreting the rest of the passage.

Also, I am now comfortable with interpreting the Roman Calendar. I was confused.
