Apostolic Church Records
« on: Friday 15 February 13 13:48 GMT (UK) »
Please does anyone know if or where these records are kept?  I'm at a standstill with a William Jones from Cwm, Ebbw Vale.  I have his marriage certificate but there are at least sixteen births registered for Merthyr Tydfil at the time he was born (in Dowlais).  The censuses give his ages with a difference of six years between them so that doesn't help. I've been told by a family member that the whole family attended the Aposotolic Church in Cwm and that William's son was a lay preacher there so I thought their records  - if there are any - might help.

I'm clutching at straws here.

Hi Dawn, thanks for your reply.  William was born in 1857 (ish!) but moved to Cwm when he was young.  He married twice- in 1884 and 1895  - and lived in Cwm for the rest of his life.  All his children were born there. According to the relative I spoke to, the whole family attended the church, including this man himself who was William's great-grandson.  I don't know when William died, again there are so many with that name but he is on the 1911 census, still in Cwm.  His second wife died in 1942. So, we're looking at the years between the early 1860s and 1911 at least.

Have you tried asking Gwent Archives?

http://www.gwentarchives.gov.uk/

Their website is under construction so not particularly helpful.

I live just a mile from the archives - which is very useful -  but they don't have anything.  I searched their catalogues there last week.  Non-conformist records are very few and far between.  I think I need to tramp around Cwm cemetery again for the umpteenth time in case I've missed anything.

Thanks again for your help.

I don't think he Apostolic records will help you with his birth, he was born 50 years before the church

Records start in 1904 and are at the archives in Swansea.

Obviously, the relative I was talking to didn't know that.  He was sure William went to that church when he was young.  Thanks very much for those links.  I'll look at them now and Swansea is not far away for me to visit.

it may have been the same building & the congregation changed denomination.

What census info do you have for him? Could you give refs, please?

I have the family in 1911 living at 8 Cwm Road, Waunlwyd.

William, born 1863 (this is doubtful) in Dowlais, Glamorgan
Wife, Dorothy, born 1866 Blaenavon

They have three children who are William's and Dorothy's and some from Dorothy's first marriage.  These are correctly described as Smith in the image but incorrectly copied as Jones.

Reg. district no. 585
Sub-district, Aberystruth
ED 05
Schedule number 8
Piece 31818

They are at the same address in 1901 and only a few houses away from there in 1891.

The relative I spoke to says the church was a tin hut built especially for the Apostolics.
