Sailing time to New Zealand
« on: Monday 18 February 13 12:06 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering how long it would have taken to sail from England to New Zealand in the years 1841-1855.I understand that it might have taken up to 6 months.
Also what would have been a typical route.
Did they mostly use sailing ships?
Thank you for any help and your time.
Have a good day

Hi

In the years 1841-55 voyages to NZ by sailing ship would typically take 3 to 6 months depending on the time of year, eg. seasonal wind patterns, general weather conditions, etc.

For example the ship Bolton left London 19 Nov 1839 arriving Port Nicholson, NZ on 30 Apr 1840.
Another ship, Slains Castle, left Deal in Kent on 18 Sept 1840 and arrived Port Nicholson on 25 Jan 1841.

[See the passenger lists at:

The book White Wings Vol II. Founding of the Provinces and Old-Time Shipping. Passenger Ships From 1840 to 1885 has more detail about the ships themselves:

One set of my 2x-gr grandparents sailed to NZ in 1859 on The Shooting Star.  The Southern Cross newspaper printed the details of the voyage which enabled me to [roughly] plot the ship's course.

Cheers

Edited:  The first steamship to carry immigrants to NZ took 51 days in 1874 (on the Mongol).
