St Mary Abbott's, Kensington burials/ deaths 1830s-40s
« on: Thursday 21 February 13 01:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Wonder if someone who has access to St Mary Abbott's Kensington early 1800s burial/death records can help me.

Thomas Green, a Whitesmith, & Elizabeth Hitchings (marr St George Bloomsbury 2/3/1823) had 9 children. 6 of who I think died young, I think, as only 3 sons are with them in 1851 census.
The family seem to have lived in King Street, Kensington from 1824 to 1840+ & all their children were baptized at St Mary Abbott's Kensington.
The children were Edward 1824, Henry 1825, John 1827, Thomas 1829, Giles William 1831, James 1833, Priscilla 1835, Oliver Hitchings 1837 & Charles Trimnell 1840.

Trying to find if Edward, Henry, John, Thomas, Giles William and Priscilla died and were buried at St Mary Abbott's, Kensington between before 1851.

Many thanks,
Craig

Hi Beth and Dawn,

Many thanks for the info you found on Priscilla and Edward. I missed Edward on Ancestry when I did a search the other day but I was in a hurry! Appreciate your help. 2 down 4 to go!

Hi Craig

The trouble with researching St Mary Abbots, is that the church has not deposited their registers and records fore safe-keeping, they are still at the church. And asking them to undertake research is an option but costly.

What you do find are copies of the Bishops Trancripts online and after 1837, marriages will appear in the GRO index.

However the surname is frequently occuring and identifying the correct entries is tricky.

There were 2 possible burials but the addresses and ages didn't match up with the baptisms so I am tempted to infer that more of the boys have survived to adulthood but left home by the time the 1851 census comes around. Unfortunately part of the 1841 census is missing which is most probably why you can find them.

For those who can get there, there are transcripts for St Mary Abbots on the open shelves at the Society of Genealogists library in London. For those who can't, the SoG offers a 'search and copy' service (at a price).

Does anyone know the meaning of the abbreviations used under the column "Quality" in the burial registers? They seem to be "AP," "NP," "or poor"-the last is obvious but the others? AP can't mean apprentice because it's applied to folk aged 1 and 77!
