Surname Caleno
« on: Thursday 21 February 13 11:53 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching my family surname for a long time but I would love to hear from anyone who has any connection with the name of Caleno.   My great grandfather changed the family name from Patrickson to Caleno in about 1865-68.   I have a lot more information but will wait for replies.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Perhaps a bit more detail will help- for example, where did your great-grandfather live?

There are others with the same surname originating from a variety of places according to LDS database-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Yes sorry I realise without that sort of information it is a wide field.   The reason I didn't put more is that it is a one family name supposedly created by this great grandfather.   Anyway, the man that changed the name, Thomas,  had been born and lived in London.  He came from an Irish family (Patrickson)  that had only been living in England since about 1847.    The first mention of the surname Caleno in the records is a child born in 1868 to Thomas and Eliza Caleno where the birth is registered in Cheltenham.  in 1870 they married still living in Cheltenham, Glos.
Hope that helps.

John Patrickson (picture framer) came from Cork and died in 1881 in London. He married Catherine (shirtmaker) who also died in London. They had Thomas Caleno born in St Giles in London in 1846. Died in 1912 in Hounslow. He had married Eliza Hewitt (b 1848 in Beverley, Yorks, d 1930 in Balham). They had my grandfather Albert Caleno b 1876, d 1916 in WW1) who married Ethel Scott (b 1878 Chelsea d 1940 Battersea). They had 6 children Albert, Stanley, Ernie, Isabell, Connie, and Ethel who was my mother. She married William Arthur Sully my father - both are deceased.

Hello Sultony
Thank you for picking up on my posting.   I do have all the information that you give in your reply.   I have followed all the families that descended from John Patrickson and I am in touch with your cousin from the Judd family.   Just always hoping that someone will come up with something new.  We were always told that the Thomas who changed his name was wanting to be a conjurer and took Caleno as a stage name.   Have never been able to find the name change through deed poll or newspaper declaration.   My sister tells me that my dad, Daniel Caleno, told her that money was involved in the name change.   Do you know anything about it.   I did once see a photograph in an auntie's collection of a man in a dinner suit pulling a rabbit out of a top hat.  I have all the other marriages of the families if you need any further information.
Best wishes

If you haven't already done so, a good way to make surname connections with other members is to enter your surname interests in the Surname Interests Table (SIT), and to check there whether others are researching these names.

This can be found at http://surname.rootschat.com/ , there is a link to it under "Your Tools" at the bottom of each Rootschat page.

The more people who enter their surnames, the more chance there will be of making a connection!
