Dating a Herbert
« on: Thursday 21 February 13 20:47 GMT (UK) »
Could any of you dating experts give a date to this, perhaps from the woman's attire. The back is blank apart from the words

'Herbert Inniswood and his sister. Selkeld Dykes'

Selkeld Dykes it would seem is not the name of his sister  ;D but the name of a small village near Penrith. I have seen some births in Cumberland, in Selkeld to an Issac Inniswood and his wife Mary. Also some in Dalston to a Robert Inniswood and his wife Jane Harrison. These were 1870's/80's. Could Herbert have been a son of one of these ?

My guess for the date of the photos is early 1900's but I'm probably wrong.

Oh, any restorers/colourists want to have a go at this, feel free.

Seoras,
Can't date your photo, but due to a complete lack of focus on my own research found myself randomly searching on Ancestry to try and find your Herbert Inniswood and think I may have found him! Searching for Herbert I came across Isaac (presumably the one you mention) in 1891 with a son Isaac H Tinniswood and a sister Ada. The H got me thinking and lo and behold he appears as a head of household in 1911 as Isaac Herbert Tinniswood. I'm about to go to bed - early start tomorrow but if you think this might be relevant and you need links please let me know.
I hope this is them - this would be the first time I've managed to help without being beaten to it by the experts. They must all be busy elsewhere ;-)

Early 1900's it is George.I would suggest somewhere around 1903-08 as she has the pigeon-breast blouse which faded around 1908 but also has the large collar which appeared around mid decade.
She appears unmarried.
He looks like a bandsman.
Following on from Carra Herbert married 1905 but Ada seems to have stayed single although there is a marriage for an Ada M Tinniswood in 1934.Shame really as she looks a handsome young lass.

The village is now called Salkeld Dykes, by the way, although I think it may have been known as Selkeld Dykes previously.

Isaac Herbert Tinniswood born 10th January 1882.  He is posing with his elder sister, Ada Mary Louisa Tinniswood born 20th July 1879. They were both born and lived at Salkeld Dykes, Great Salkeld, Cumberland, England.
He wears the dress uniform of a trooper in the Westmoreland and Cumberland Yeomanry. His OR’s (other ranks) pill box hat is of the post 1898 pattern. The dress jacket is scarlet laced with white cords across the chest, white collars and pointed cuffs, dark blue trousers with a double white stripe. My guess is that the photograph was taken in about 1902.
Herbert did not serve in the army in WW1. He died on 17th June 1965.
