George Young - born 1894 Aberdeen - emigrated to New York at age 20
« on: Tuesday 26 February 13 22:57 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone recognise the details in the subject line.    George Young emigrated to the USA from Scotland in approximately 1912/1913.  He died six years later of influenza and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx.   Would be interested to know if he has any descendants living in Scotland (Aberdeen specifically) today.

Hi Conchie,

Welcome to Rootschat

Have you found George on a passenger list ?  Sometimes it gives a parent or next of kin in the detail.  Ellis Island holds the passenger lists from 1892, also free to register if you need access.

Hi Conchie

Welcome from me too  :)

What other info do you have on George Young that will help you in tracing his extended Scottish family? Have you got his birth certificate to confirm parents' names? Any census entries for him (1901/1911) to check on the names of siblings?

How do you know he left for the US circa 1912-3? Is this info included on some document?

Monica

Thank you kindly for the two replies I have had so far.    I do have more information on George than I already stated.    My reason for putting out this search is in case anyone from his family today are researching him on the internet and looking for any missing pieces to the puzzle.   George was born in 1984 to William and Elspet (Elsie) Young in Aberdeen.   He had several brothers and sisters, and at 20 emigrated to the USA... whether that was on his own or as a family unit I do not know, but given his age I would assume on his own.    He married my grandmother (Teresa Connolly) in New York and they went on to have a beautiful baby girl Ruth.   Sadly he succumbed as so many did in that period to influenza at the age of 27.  She returned to Ireland barely a month later with their baby, who tragically died less than six weeks later at only 11 months old of pneumonia.     Perhaps he has family today who never knew  what happened to his widow and child.

Hi Conchie,

This is the 1901 Scotland Census 24 Northfield Place St Machar. Aberdeen showing George with his parents - which may help in the search for other relatives.

Wm James Young 19 Ruth Young 12 Eveline Young 10
George Young 8 Lillie Young 5 John P Young 3
Martha Young 11 months.
