Hi

A bit difficult to say, apart from looking after/opening and closing  a gate.  Springburn was fairly industrialised by 1861 so he could have worked on a canal gate, a railway gate or, possibly, at the chemical works. I don't think it would have been a toll gate.

That makes sense.  Likely to have been in the railway as Springburn was a railway centre.
